What Do the Surprising Golden Globes Winners Mean for the Oscar Race?

If you’ve signed up to receive and send texts with the Little Gold Men podcast team (here’s the link! It’s never too late!) you had the chance to send your burning questions about the Golden Globes while they were happening on Sunday night. And based on the texts we received, you mostly had one question: what in the world is going on with the actress races?

After surprising wins for both The United States vs. Billie Holiday star Andra Day and The Mauritanian’s Jodie Foster, neither of whom are even nominated at the upcoming SAG Awards, both the best actress and best supporting actress Oscar races feel as unpredictable as ever. It’s a valid question every year how much the Golden Globes really reflect the Oscar race— particularly this year, as the Hollywood Foreign Press remains embroiled in controversy about the lack of diversity in its ranks. But with everyone still stuck at home for this year’s awards, the Globes are the most visible platform most of the contenders have had yet. So the excellent acceptance speech from best supporting actor winner Daniel Kaluuya, Minari director Lee Isaac Chung, and Nomadland director Chloe Zhao could mean a lot for their awards hopes. Then again, it’s an unpredictable season.  Who knows what might happen next!

And even though it’s an early episode, we’ve still got an interview to share, and it’s a big one: Joanna Robinson talks to Delroy Lindo and Spike Lee, the star and director of Da 5 Bloods.

Listen to the special early episode above, and subscribe to Little Gold Men on Apple Podcasts, or anywhere else you get your podcasts.
