John Carpenter Leaving the Door Open for a Return to the Director’s Chair; “I’m Working On a Couple Things”

It’s now been over 10 years since John Carpenter directed his last movie, that being 2010’s The Ward, and Carpenter has mostly spent the past decade working on his music. He returned to the Halloween franchise to compose the score for Halloween 2018 and its upcoming sequel, and he’s released a handful of albums with another one on the way next week.

As we recently learned, Carpenter is next lending his talents to the world of podcasting. But what about a return to the director’s chair? He’s not shutting that door just yet…

When Daily Beast asked Carpenter in a new interview that was just published this week if we’ll ever see him make a return to directing, Carpenter offered up the following response:

“You might! I’m working on a couple of things. But I’m not doing anything for a while, until the world comes back and rights itself. It’s insane now. It’s nuts! I’m not going to go out there and get sick.”

In the same interview, however, Carpenter lamented about how “unbelievably hard” directing can be. He explained, “It’s stressful, it’s physically difficult, it’s tough, and you have to be a certain kind of human being to love it. And I’m not certain I am. I love it but not in an ego way. Music is a lot more gratifying, in a way, because there it is. It’s right in front of you, and you don’t have to wait until it’s cut together and deal with an armory of people making movies.”

Head over to The Daily Beast to read the full interview with Carpenter. It’s an interesting read, as Carpenter interviews always are, featuring his reflections on his movies as well as his thoughts on the current social/political climate we find ourselves in. Will he ever make another movie? It sounds like he’s at least open to the possibility, and that’s good enough for us.
