Ella Emhoff’s Inauguration Look Steals the Show

It was the inauguration fit heard round the Twitter timeline. As former presidents, senators, dignitaries, and guests filed into the Capitol, Vice President Kamala Harris’s stepdaughter, Ella Emhoff, sent the internet into a frenzy when she stepped out in an embellished, plaid Miu Miu coat over a ruffled Batsheva dress. Up against the likes of Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, and Garth Brooks in Westworld cosplay, it was Emhoff who seemed to come away from the ceremony leaving the most lasting impression.

Considering the 22-year-old Parsons student is a textile artist and designer in her own right, it’s only fair she would arrive in style. Between lighthearted selfies, shots of her sometimes surreal paintings, and raffles in support of For the Gworls (an organization that assists Black trans people with housing and gender-affirmative surgery), Emhoff’s Instagram shows off an array of funky, colorful, and geometric pieces, each handmade by her. A swipe-through of her recent commissions displays an array of bright pants and flower tank tops. All of this has already garnered her the moniker of “slow fashion king” by Garage magazine. Its interview with the now second daughter revealed her admiration for many of the internet’s current It brands and names in fashion.

“I really, really love Tyler McGillivary’s work. I think she’s been doing some really cool stuff. I love the people who are doing curated shops right now. Café Forgot is really cool. They’re highlighting so many artists that I had no idea about, like Kristin Mallison, who makes corsets out of recycled tapestry.”

Today’s entry to what will (hopefully) be an ever-growing list of looks only builds on other hard-hitting ensembles Emhoff has pulled off: As recently as yesterday, she arrived at the capital in a full Thom Browne outfit, including striped tie and button-down, and late last year she donned an impeccably tailored Frankie Shop pinstripe suit. If this is any indication, then the fashion girlies will be eating well for the years to come with this administration.
