Elliot Page, the Oscar-nominated actor who recently came out as trans, will continue playing the lead role of Vanya in the Netflix series The Umbrella Academy, Variety reports. Vanity Fair has reached out to Page’s reps for comment. The show revolves around a band of estranged, adopted siblings with superpowers, who reunite after their father’s death. Vanya is the seventh child and the most powerful of the group. Page has starred in the superhero series, one of Netflix’s biggest original offerings, for the last two seasons.
Netflix is also in the process of changing Page’s name on all his projects that are currently available to stream on the service, a source told the Variety. The changes began reflecting Tuesday.
Page, who has starred in films like Juno and Inception, came out as trans Tuesday, releasing a lengthy statement on Twitter and Instagram.
“Hi friends, I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot,” he wrote. “I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life. I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along this journey.”
He also wrote about his fear of coming out, writing that he is scared of “the invasiveness, the hate, the ‘jokes’ and of violence.” Page also demanded action, citing statistics showing that “at least 40 transgender people have been murdered, the majority of which were Black and Latinx trans women. To all the political leaders who work to criminalize trans health care and deny our right to exist and to all those with a massive platform who continue to spew hostility towards the trans community: you have blood on your hands.”
“To all trans people who deal with harassment, self-loathing, abuse and the threat of violence every day: I see you, I love you and I will do everything I can to change this world for the better,“ he wrote at the end.
On Twitter and Instagram, Netflix responded : “So proud of our superhero! WE LOVE YOU ELLIOT! Can’t wait to see you return in season 3!”
Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy, which also stars Mary J. Blige and Robert Sheehan, does not yet have a release date. Production is slated to begin next February.
