Now that she’s successfully, probably flipped the state of Georgia blue in the presidential election, Stacy Abrams took a quick breather from her tireless fight against gerrymandering before the January Senate runoff to weigh in on another very important fight—who the best boyfriend was on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Twitter users were discussing the super popular late 90s show on Monday, at one point looping in the voting rights activist by writing, “Hey @staceyabrams you wanna talk buffy sometime?” Another user responded, “She ships Spike.” This revelation prompted Abrams to chime in, “To be fair, Angel was the right boyfriend for Buffy coming into her power. Spike was the right man to be with as she became the power.” Her take kicked off a huge discussion amongst fans over the pros and cons of Buffy’s various relationships over the years.
This isn’t the first time Abrams has shown off her vast Buffy universe knowledge. In a 2019 interview with Now This, the politician drew parallels between the show’s potential slayers and engagement in modern politics. She explained, “We have a whole universe of potentials. We’ve got a nation of potentials, many of whom are being activated right now. This political moment has activated people who for years wanted to do more, wanted to say more, but didn’t think they were ready to be called. We now know they’ve been called and our job is to create the space and, through Fair Fight Action and Fair Fight 2020, to create the opportunity for that potential to take root. That’s why I do what I do.”
But in terms of the planned 2020 reboot of the show, Abrams isn’t quite as enthusiastic. “I tend to be skeptical of remakes,” she said. “I do not mind taking a core narrative and expanding on it. I do take exception often to trying to redo the original. Or, if you’re going to do it, make sure that you’ve divorced it so much that for something that is as epic as a series, that you’re trying something different.” She added, “I think if you’re going to do it, it should be based on the universe that was created by Joss Whedon, but pick another person. He created so much opportunity with the potentials, we might as well follow one of them instead of trying to recast and recapture what Sarah Michelle Gellar brought to the Buffy franchise.” And if those reboot producers are looking for a new writer to spearhead this project, Abrams clearly not only has the knowledge but also the know-how.
