After Britain’s lockdown first lifted in early July, the members of the royal family were slow to embrace mask wearing, as the rest of the U.K. was. But eventually Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and Kate Middleton realized that they could be a great way to stay safe and accessorize, and both women were spotted wearing masks with distinctive Liberty of London floral prints.
During an event last Friday, Princess Anne upped the ante with the most regal mask we’ve seen so far. Anne wore a white cotton mask embroidered with her royal cypher, an “A” in script with a crown floating on top. According to the Mirror, she kept the mask on while she visited Citizens Advice Harlow, a volunteer-run counseling and advice service. While she was there, she learned about how the organization was adapting to coronavirus and awarded a few of its volunteers with certificates for their service.
On Wednesday, Anne donned the mask again to visit a marine biology exhibit.
Every member of the royal family has a similar cypher, and they show up in unexpected places. Camilla gave Kate a gold bracelet that featured her “K” cypher after she married Prince William. Meghan Markle, an avid letter writer, made good use of her cypher on her stationery, and when Meghan and Prince Harry were still senior royals, a combination of their two cyphers was their logo.
Though Anne has often been called the hardest working royal, she hasn’t always been known as a fashion trend-setter. But this year, Queen Elizabeth’s daughter turned 70, and a spate of magazine features—and a new set of birthday photos—revealed that the rest of the royals could learn a thing or two from her timeless, casual style.
