Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez Leave the Hamptons

So it won’t be the Mets for Jennifer Lopez and fiancé Alex Rodriguez after all. They withdrew their bid for partial ownership of the baseball team on Friday. By Sunday, A-Rod’s old team the Yankees beat the Mets after catcher Gary Sánchez hit a grand slam. It’s not a total loss then, I guess.

The couple was willing to put up $300 million, and yet billionaire Steve Cohen won the bid, as he offered, well, much more. You know what they say about billionaires. They always win at others’ expense. This time it was at A-Rod and J.Lo’s expense (their combined net worth is estimated at merely $750 million, see).

“Alex and I are so disappointed!” Lopez reportedly wrote on Twitter, though the message appears to have been deleted. “We worked so hard the past 6 months with the dream of becoming the first minority couple and the first woman owner to buy her father’s favorite Major League Baseball team with her own hard earned money. We still haven’t given up!! #NY4ever.”

So on Sunday they came to terms with the loss, packed up their summer stuff, and got to the airport. They’d spent various parts of the summer in the Hamptons at Lopez’s $10 million Water Mill estate, though they hopped around a bit. It looked fun! But fall is on its way, and you have to get serious. You have to know when to call it in most things in life. You have to know when you should fly out to your home in Miami or, perhaps, Bel Air. There on the tarmac, they exchanged a kiss, and then they went wheels up, flying somewhere far from the Hamptons, far from the New York Mets.
